Dance ~ Lesson #3 ~ How to Compose a Dance

Postby Moreta » 17 Nov 2011, 04:46

Roleplaying a dance can be very different from dancing in real life, even if you are RPing a dance that you have done for real a hundred times.

On the one hand, even someone with physical disabilities, no rhythm, two left feet, or just someone who is a complete klutz can be perfectly sensual, flowing and a beauty to behold in RP.
But...
On the other hand, even one who is a highly trained dancer in real life... one who people flock to and pay their hard earned money to see, will bomb in a RP dance if their words are not well crafted.

These hints will help you create a believable and enjoyable dance no matter what your level of real life skill.

• Paint a picture with your words. The words are the only thing your audience sees. They will not see a complex bit of footwork, a flourish of the hands, a sweetly turned hip, unless you show it to them with your words.

• Describe where you are dancing, the people who are watching, their reactions (being careful not to cross over into godmodding).

• Describe yourself in detail... Your best features, what you are wearing, your feelings. (If you haven't read the Role Play Guide recently, now would be a good time to re-read it.)

• Don't get so caught up in making it flawlessly perfect that it no longer has any human element. You are a slave, not a robot.

• Continue through the dance to explain what you are wearing or not wearing, what you are using.. bells, zills, bangles, veils, rope, chain, etc. Look for little details.

• Note the music and how it incorporates into your dance. Describe the buildup of the sounds, the flow of the music in such a way that it can almost be "heard" in the imagination.

• Describe body movements and facial expressions. Show your fear, desire, pride. Explain how your body reacts to things; the movements of your hands, fingers, torso. Discover body language.

• Tell a story, with your movements. find ways to enhance your words and make the dance come alive within the details

• Explain how you got from one move to the next. You aren't likely to be kneeling backwards on the floor one second and leaping over the sand pit in the next second with nothing in between.

• Keep it believable. Don't describe completely ridiculous or impossible body movements, like flying or some such unless that is a clear part of your everyday movements. And even if you do have magic, special abilities, or what have you, don't rely heavily on them. The people are here to see you move your body in slave dance, not to watch a magic show.

• Be adaptable; Involve the master or those you are dancing to in order to draw the audience in.

• Set the dance type, is it a story, erotic dance or a role dance. Then determine the phases and how you wish to present it. Some do dances without preparations, others prepare and outline, others have pre-written the dance. Depending on your style and your personal skills, determine the best way for you and use it.

• The success of your dance will be judged by those watching. Many will watch it and feel the emotions portrayed and not be critical of your efforts, but there are others who will be very critical. A slave should seek to learn from her dances and how they are pleasing to those watching or how they can be improved in the future.
Good... Bad... I'm the girl with the battle axe!

I have re-read this Mistress and understand it a bit better but may have more ideas after I see another dance.
